Initiative of the MBA School’s Governance Structure and Organizational Setting

 

1. The MBA School’s Governance Structure

 

The MBA School is an independently-operated teaching and research department of the university. With background of the university’s business studies, the School is responsible for the administration of two professional master degree programs: MBA and MPM. The professional degree postgraduate education leading group and the MBA Education Consulting Commission are responsible for making the School’s major decisions; the university’s academic commission and academic degree commission are responsible for verification of MBA trainers and mentors’ qualifications and degree-grants; the MBA Academic (Degree) Commission is responsible for making the MBA-relevant recruitment, cultivation plans, degree administration, teaching, research and case subject approval; the School’s administrative department, academic department and research department are respectively responsible for work relevant with the School’s administration, teaching and research. The on-campus relevant schools and the functional departments are providing support of teaching resources, research and logistics for the MBA School’s operation. The MBA School’s Governance Structure is indicated in Figure 1 as below:

2. Organizational Structure of the MBA School

 

The MBA School adopts a matrix organizational structure combining the systems of programs and functions. The whole organizational structure is divided into three departments: administrative department, academic department and research department under which there are functional management departments including cultivation & degree affairs department, student recruitment & market promotion department, student & alumni affairs department and international communication and cooperation department and administrative office as well as teaching and researching segments including teaching development center, teaching supervision team, Zhejiang Merchants Business Start-up and Development Center and Management Case Center. There are three programs: MBA, MPM and EDP under responsibilities of the program directors and supported by interdepartmental cooperation to complete the program tasks. The organizational structure of the MBA School is indicated in Figure 2 as below.

3. Administrative Organizations of the MBA School

 

The administrative organizations of the School primarily include cultivation & degree affairs department, student recruitment and market promotion department, students & alumni affairs department, international communication and collaboration department and administrative office. Each of these departments has separately been arranged the relevant positions. The details are indicated in Figure 3 as below.

4. Academic Organizations of the MBA School

 

I. Composition and Functions of the Academic Organizations

 

The School has set up the quality insurance system co-worked by the president-led administrative and academic organizations. There is a position of chief supervisor who is responsible for supervising and controlling academic quality of the institution under the guidance of the MBA academic (degree) commission and leading academic organization of the School. The academic organizations specifically include the Teaching Development Center and Teaching Supervision Team. In addition, the School’s Cultivation and Degree Affairs Department accordingly provides administrative support for teaching.

 

The School employed one academic director within and from outside of the campus as a concurrent chief director of the teaching development center. The academic director should hold high academic reputation and experience of academic management with understanding of the MBA cultivation characteristics and the development trend.

 

The main duties of the academic director include: 1.Putting all teaching & research departments and offices under unified guidance with responsibility for contents of all MBA Courses, buildup of the teaching personnel group and organizing of discussions on course-teaching; 2. Carrying out curriculum development and buildup; 3. Organizing the revision of the cultivation initiative; 4. Formulating standards and controlling the quality of the MBA degree dissertations.

 

The teaching supervision team is responsible for executing teaching and supervision of all programs at the School.

II. Make-up of Teaching & Research Departments and Offices and Hiring of Teachers

1. Make-up of Teaching & Research Departments and Offices

The School sets up teaching & research departments and offices according to the demands of MBA development. There are 6 departments according to the courses-involved research areas and the nature of curriculum, including Supply Chain & Operation Management Department, Organization & Human Resources Management Department, Strategy & Marketing Management Department, Financial Management Department, Business Start-up & Integrated Practice Department and Internet & Business Innovation Department.

 

Each department is set with a dean responsible for construction and teaching of 4-8 MBA courses and guiding of the MBA graduation dissertations. 2. Hiring of Teachers

 

The School made up the qualification requirements of MBA teachers according to the development of the MBA Program. Both on and off campus, the School respectively for all courses hired on-campus MBA specialized teachers, on-campus MBA teachers, off-campus MBA teachers (from home and abroad), granted letter of appointment or signed employment contracts (1-3 years for the employment duration, determined their responsibilities, clarifying the requirements of assessment during the employment periods and methods of benefit distribution.

 

  

  

5. Research Organizations of the School

 

The teaching and research organizations are composed of two parts: Zhejiang Merchants Business Start-up and Management Case Center, as indicated in Figure 5. Under the Zhejiang Merchants Business Start-up and Development Center there are 3 research institutes including the international cooperation research platform jointly formed by the Program Management & Organization Strategy Research Institute and the Laboratory of Multidisciplinary Studies in Project Management of UQAC (or LEMGP). The Management Case Center is jointly established by the MBA School, School of Business Administration and the School of Finance & Accounting responsible for confirming, developing, writing and collecting management cases, organizing research discussions on cases and providing case materials and methodology for teaching at the MBA and MPM Programs.
